EA Rules for fish movement
SIZE REQUIREMENTS
All species of fish less than 5cm (2inches) are considered by the EA to be fry
GROUP 1 FISH
This group is comprised of those species which the EA regard as large and include -
CARP, TENCH, BARBEL and COMMON BREAM.
Group 1 fish fall into THREE size categories for examination:
5 - 15cm (2 - 6 inches)
15 - 25cm (6 - 10 inches)
over 25cm (10 inch plus)
GROUP 2 FISH
Include all other species such as ROACH, RUDD, SILVER BREAM, TROUT and SALMON
Group 2 fish fall into TWO size categories for examination:
5 - 15cm (2 - 6 inches)
over 15cm (6 inches plus)
PIKE
Pike are treated separately with two size categories
Under 46 cm (under 18 inches)
Over 46 cm (over 18 inches)

The Environment Agency will ONLY accept a minimum of 30 fish for examination

At least 10 fish of each species must be examined but if the fish sample is comprised of mixed species

A minimum of 5 from each size category to be moved must be examined e.g. if all three sizes of carp being moved there must be at least 5 fish from each size category so a minimum of 15 carp must be provided, plus a further 15 fish, either carp or other species to give the 30 fish sample. If all three sizes of carp and two other fish species are to be moved the total sample size is 35 fish.
